Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) in a letter to Muhammadu Buhari, President of Nigeria has expressed concern over the attacks on journalists and media workers during coverage of Nigeria’s Presidential and Senatorial elections held on February 23, 2019.
PPF Secretary General Owais Aslam Ali in his letter, has condemned the attacks on journalists during election coverage and called on the Nigerian authorities to protect journalists working in the line of duty.
According to International Press Centre (IPC), several journalists and media workers were assaulted in different ways including arrest, denial of access to centres and injury.
The law enforcement agencies arrested journalists including Nwanosike Onu of The Nation, Geoffrey Anyanwu of Sun, David-Chyddy Eleke of ThisDay, Vincent Ujumadu of Vanguard and Tony Okafor of Punch.
The journalists were arrested from the residence of Vice Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi where they had gone for coverage during the voting process.
In another incident, an unidentified armed men opened fire on Reginald Dei, a government house photographer at his residence
Various groups of journalists were barred from covering results collation in Ugheli North, Delta State; Amuwo/Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State; Bauchi and Kebbi State.
