ISLAMABAD: The\nauthorities on Tuesday said they had launched an investigation into torture of\ntwo journalists in Chaman. The two journalists said that they were tortured for\nreporting on a coronavirus quarantine centre near the Afghan border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Television reporters\nSaeed Ali Achakzai and Abdul Mateen Achakzai said they were abused while\nspending three days in detention in Balochistan province. Photos released to\nAFP by the men, who are not related, showed them with apparent red welts across\ntheir backs. Balochistan\u00b4s Home Minister Ziaullah Langove said an inquiry was\nunderway into the “brutal incident”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Three\nofficials who were directly involved in the incident have been suspended,”\nLangove said, adding that the original case against the journalists had been\ndropped. In a statement, press freedom group Reporters Without Borders (RSF)\nshowed concern over the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Pakistan\nFederal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has taken notice of torture and brutality\nthat the two Chaman-based journalists had to face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their physical\ncondition is in bad shape due to the severe beating and torture inflicted upon\nthem, while they were locked up by the district administration, says a PFUJ\npress release on Tuesday. PFUJ President Shahzada Zulfiqar and Secretary\nGeneral Nasir Zaidi in a joint statement have demanded for a judicial inquiry\ninto the incident along with immediate suspension and arrest of persons who\ntortured the two journalists in custody, under Section 3 (1) of the West\nPakistan Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance (MPO) 1960.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This violence is an\ninhumane act that the journalists were subjected to by authorities during\nillegal arrest. Such acts cannot be ignored anymore,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PFUJ have urged\nBalochistan government and concerned authorities to ensure safety of the\njournalist community in Balochistan, as such acts of violence and injustice\ntarnish the country\u2019s reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
