KARACHI: The\nadministrative judge of the antiterrorism courts on Tuesday remanded in police\ncustody a suspect in a case pertaining to possession of illicit weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police claimed to\nhave arrested Kamran, alias Zeeshan alias Shani, who had been reportedly\nsentenced to death in the murder case of Geo News reporter Wali Khan Babar, for\npossessing illicit arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Babar, a 28-year-old\ntelevision journalist, was driving home from office when he was shot dead in\nLiaquatabad within the jurisdiction of the Supermarket police station on\nJanuary 13, 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An antiterrorism\ncourt in Kandhkot had awarded death sentence to Kamran and Faisal Mehmood,\nalias Mota, in absentia while four co-convicts were given life imprisonment in\nthe present case on March 1, 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Tuesday, the\ninvestigating officer produced the suspect before the ATCs\u2019 administrative\njudge to seek his physical remand in an arms case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He mentioned that\nthe suspect was also required to be interrogated in connection with the murder\ncase of journalist Wali Khan Babar in which he was reportedly avoiding arrest\nfor 10 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allowing the\nrequest, the judge remanded him in police custody, till June 30, with direction\nto the IO to produce him on the next date along with an investigation report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the\npolice, Kamran along with his accomplices, all allegedly belonging to the\nMuttahida Qaumi Movement, had killed Wali Babar, who was reportedly associated\nwith the Awami National Party, over his reporting against the MQM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kamran was arrested\nin a joint operation conducted by the Special Investigation Unit and a federal\nintelligence agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially, police\nhad named eight accused, including Liaquat Ali, who was killed in an encounter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the\npolice, several witnesses connected with the case were murdered, including\nRajab Bengali, who was killed in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another \u2018star\u2019\nwitness Haider Ali, on whose testimony the conviction had taken place, was also\nkilled in 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advocate Naimat Ali\nRandhawa was also murdered in September 2013 while he was pleading the case as\na special public prosecutor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to an\nalleged confession of Zeeshan, the MQM-London South Africa group was involved\nin the journalist\u2019s murder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
