The International\nFederation of Journalists (IFJ) and its Pakistan affiliate, the Pakistan\nFederal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) have welcomed the arrest on June 15 of the\nkiller of Geo News journalist Wali Khan Babar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IFJ urged the\nPakistan government to move proactively to end impunity regarding all crimes\nagainst journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karachi Police\narrested the Kamran alias Zeeshan Shani in a joint raid on Monday, six years\nafter he and five others were convicted for the murder. Kamran absconded after\nBabar was gunned down in the Liaquatabad area of Karachi on January 13, 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kamran was arrested\nduring a  raid carried out after a tip-off from a federal intelligence\nagency. With his arrest, all six convicts involved in the killing of the\njournalist have been brought to justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 1, 2014, an\nanti-terrorism court (ATC) convicted Naveed Polka, Muhammad Ali Rizvi, Faisal\nMahmood, and Mohammad Shahrukh Khan to life imprisonment, and ordered death\nsentences in absentia for Kamran alias ‘Zeeshan’ and Faisal Mehmood alias\n‘Mota’ for the killing of the journalist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within a week of the\nmurder of the Geo News journalist, five witnesses of the shooting, including\ntwo police officers and an informer, were also shot dead. The prosecutor, in\nthe case, Naimat Ali Randhawa, was also killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to\nKamran’s confession, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) London faction, which\nhe joined in 2008, was involved in the journalist’s murder. According to the\npolice report, Babar was killed because the MQM feared that the slain\njournalist would report on anti-MQM stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PFUJ said:\n“PFUJ president GM Jamali and Secretary-General Rana Muhammad Azeem have\nexpressed their satisfaction over the arrest of Murderer of Wali Khan Babar.\nPFUJ demands that the  murderer is brought before  the court of\nlaw.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 IFJ said:\n“IFJ appreciates the police efforts in the arrest of the fugitive mastermind\nbehind the tragic murder of journalist Wali Khan Babar. In a climate of\nincreasing impunity on crimes against journalists, this is a positive step. We\nurge the Pakistan government to continue its efforts to fight  impunity\nand ensure justice is done for the many journalists murdered in\nPakistan.”\u2014IFJ media release<\/p>\n\n\n\n
