LAHORE: The Lahore\nHigh Court on Tuesday issued a notice to the National Accountability Bureau\n(NAB) on post-arrest bail petition by Jang group editor-in-chief Mir Shakilur\nRehman in a 34-year-old case of 54-kanal land allegedly allotted to him by then\nPunjab chief minister Nawaz Sharif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the outset of the\nhearing, Justice Sardar Ahmad Naeem, head of a two-judge bench, asked the\ncounsel for the petitioner if there was any fresh ground taken in the petition\nfor release on bail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bench had\ndismissed two identical petitions against the arrest and for release of Mr\nRehman on bail when he was on physical remand with the NAB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advocate Amjad\nPervez, the counsel, responded to the judge\u2019s query saying the petitioner was\nno more in the bureau\u2019s custody and on judicial remand. He said there was no\njustification to keep the petitioner behind the bars any more. The counsel\nfurther said there was nothing to be recovered from the petitioner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To another query by\nthe bench, he said then chief minister Nawaz Sharif, also a suspect in the\ninquiry, had not joined the investigation by the NAB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After hearing the\ncounsel, the bench issued a notice to the NAB for its reply to the bail\npetition by May 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NAB had arrested\nMr Rehman on March 12 when he made his second appearance before its\ninvestigation team. He was sent to jail on judicial remand on April 28 by an\naccountability court. The accountability court also held hearing of judicial\nremand on Tuesday, however, the jail authorities did not produce Mr Rehman in\nview of a government\u2019s decision of not transporting under-trial prisoners to\ncourts during the coronavirus lockdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An official of the\njail presented a report to the court and stated that the suspect could not be\nbrought from the district jail due to the precautionary measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
