MUZAFFARABAD: Indian police have registered a general FIR \u2014 the first of its kind \u2014 against \u201cvarious\u201d suspects in occupied Kashmir on the charge of misusing social media, it emerged on Monday.<\/p>\n
An official of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government condemned the Indian move as \u201cyet another draconian measure\u201d on the likes of mass graves, mass detentions and mass slaughter.<\/p>\n
Chaudhry Tariq Farooq, the senior minister in AJK government, in a tweet claimed it \u201chappens nowhere but in India-occupied Kashmir that an entire population is booked for exercising its right to expression. The world must take note of it.\u201d<\/p>\n
The FIR was registered by Cyber Police Station Kashmir Zone in Srinagar against \u201cvarious\u201d social media users for \u201cdefying government orders and misusing social media platforms\u201d, according to a press release issued by police headquarters in Srinagar.<\/p>\n
India had clamped communications blackout in occupied Jammu and Kashmir on Aug 5 last year after stripping the disputed region of its special status and placed it under a military lockdown.<\/p>\n
The longest outage in any democracy came to a partial end late last month when Indian authorities ordered restoration of low-speed second generation (2G) mobile internet in the occupied territory, but restricted access to just 300 \u201cwhitelisted\u201d websites, including tax collection, education, banking and government department sites.<\/p>\n
Popular social media sites and apps still remained blocked for the eight million besieged Kashmiris.<\/p>\n
