Karachi: The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) will launch its report titled, “Acts of Intimidation: In Pakistan, journalists’ fear and censorship grow even as fatal violence declines,” at the Wilson Center in Washington, D.C. on September 12, 2018.

CPJ Asia Program Coordinator Steven Butler is the author of the report and the report launching event will also include a documentary, “Acts of Intimidation,” produced by CPJ Multimedia Producer Mustafa Hameed.

The report and the documentary will highlight that on the one hand the number of killed journalists in Pakistan has decreased but the country’s military has increased its restrictions on media freedom through barring access to information, intimidation and even inciting violence against journalists. As a result, media houses and journalists now refrain from covering sensitive issues out of fear of reprisal.

CPJ will also conduct a panel discussion co-hosted by the Wilson Center. The panelists include CPJ’s Butler and Hameed, as well as Michael Kugelman, deputy director of the Wilson Center’s Asia program, and Farahnaz Ispahani, a global fellow at the center. Other panelists include Madiha Afzal, Adjunct Assistant Professor of global policy at John Hopkins SAIS and non-resident fellow at the Brookings Institution and Anwar Iqbal, Washington correspondent of Pakistani newspaper.
