SUKKUR: Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) judge Mushtaq Ahmed Leghari on Saturday awarded the death sentence to two proclaimed offenders, life imprisonment to four under-trial prisoners and acquitted one accused in the murder case of Geo News reporter Wali Babar.

ATC judge Kandhkot-Kashmore Mushtaq Ahmed Leghari announced the judgment on Saturday at the Shikarpur Central Jail, awarding the death sentence to proclaimed offenders Kamran alias Zeeshan and Faisal Mota, life imprisonment to Faisal Mehmood alias Nafsiyati, Naveed alias Polka, Muhammad Ali Rizvi and Shahrukh alias Mani. The judge acquitted Muhammed Shakil Malik.

Murtaza Babar, the brother of the slain journalist, and his lawyer, Abdul Fatah Chandio, were present when the judge announced his verdict. The Central Jail Shikarpur was cordoned off by the police and the Rangers when the judgment was being announced.

Wali Babar, a Geo News journalist, was shot dead in January 2011 in Liaquatabad, Karachi, when he was on his way home from the office.

The Sindh government transferred the case from Karachi to Shikarpur in November 2013 because of serious threats to the lawyers and police officials associated with the case.

SHIKARPUR: The defence counsel in the journalist Wali Babar murder case on Saturday submitted an application in an anti-terrorism court, seeking transfer of the trial to a district and sessions court.

The counsel for the accused argued that the murder case came under the jurisdiction of a sessions court according to the law. He requested the court to transfer the trial to a sessions court.

The judge of the ATC heard arguments from both sides on the application and adjourned the hearing of the case till Feb 1 when it would decide if the proceedings of this case would be conducted by a district and sessions court or the anti-terrorism court.
