ISLAMABAD – Pakistan\nElectronic Media Regulatory Authority ( PEMRA) on Thursday asked all electronic\nmedia houses to ensure continuity of dedicated public awareness campaigns to\nsensitize people on coronavirus pandemic and to support the efforts and\nsacrifices being made by healthcare workers across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While issuing\ndirectives and guidelines for electronic media licensees for the purpose of\ncoverage and reporting on Coronavirus (COVID-19), PEMRA advised all the media\nhouses to constitute special editorial board with the purpose to verify\nauthenticity, accuracy and correctness of the information pertaining to any\ndrug, vaccine or other treatment like plasma through Drug Regulatory Authority\nof Pakistan (DRAP), federal and provincial health ministries. This was essential\nin order to avoid negative impact of information about drugs, vaccine that\ncould ultimately damage public health and lead to loss of lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Media houses should\nensure that only qualified and registered healthcare professionals working on\nCOVID-19 were provided airtime for expert opinion, the PEMRA said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Any videos or\ninformation available on social media of individuals portraying themselves as\nhealthcare workers spreading disinformation and fake news about the pandemic\nmust be avoided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is an\nacknowledged fact that public awareness is a key pillar of response strategy\nagainst any crisis situation and presently the COVID19 pandemic. Unprecedented\nand focused media campaigns run by private satellite TV channels for the last\nseveral months were highly appreciated. Pakistani media has helped the masses\nto know the sensitivities associated with this pandemic and its impact on\nrequired profound behavioural change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pandemic was\nlikely to continue for some time and a peak was expected in the near future.\nNow more than ever, responsible and authentic reporting on electronic media was\nrequired in order to keep public informed, avoid panic and maintain calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The challenge in\ncoming days and weeks would need continued risk and crisis communication,\ncountering disinformation and flat out fake news. Besides, the most important\npractice would be to avoid any coverage which creates sensationalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
