PARIS: Journalists in Pakistan are targeted from \u201call sides\u201d even as the conditions for media in the country improved slightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cJournalists are targeted by extremist groups, militant organisations and state organisations,\u201d stated a new report on press freedom by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).<\/p>\n

The report, released on Wednesday showed that Pakistan had jumped 12 spots to 147 in RSF\u2019s in 2016 World Press Freedom Index, up from 159 in 2015 and 158 in 2014.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Pakistani media are nonetheless regarded as among the freest in Asia when it comes to covering the squabbling among politicians,\u201d the report added.<\/p>\n

The advocacy group which ranks 180 countries on indicators such as media independence, self-censorship, rule of law, transparency and abuses noted that while terrorists and government may be at war with each other, both are \u201call always ready to denounce acts of \u201csacrilege\u201d by the media.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cInevitably, self-censorship is widely practiced within news organisations.\u201d<\/p>\n
