KARACHI: The three-member judicial commission, constituted by the Supreme Court to investigate the murder attempt on Geo News senior anchor Hamid Mir, on Monday initiated in-camera proceedings at the Karachi Registry of the apex court.

Headed by Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, the commission, which has to ascertain the facts, identify culprits and fix responsibility for the incident, was briefed by senior government, police and Rangers officials.

The home secretary, IG Sindh, Additional IG Karachi, DG Rangers Sindh, Joint Director Intelligence Bureau, DIG East, DIG Special Branch, SSP Traffic and other police officers appeared before the commission along with the relevant record and submitted their confidential reports on the incident. Statements will be recorded from today (Tuesday).

The IGP Sindh, Iqbal Mehmood, briefed the commission about the incident.It is pertinent to mention that following the attack on Hamid Mir, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had requested the Chief Justice of Pakistan to constitute a judicial commission to probe the incident.

The other members of commission are Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan and Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman. The commission shall also make recommendations to avoid such incidents in future.

KARACHI: Top police and intelligence officials on Monday recorded their statements before a three-member judicial commission constituted to probe the attack on senior TV anchor Hamid Mir.

The commission comprising Justices Anwar Zaheer Jamali, Iqbal Hameedur Rahman and Ejaz Afzal conducted the in-camera proceedings at the Karachi Registry of the Supreme Court.

Those who attended the proceedings included director general of Rangers, DG Intelligence Bureau, provincial police chief, Karachi police chief, joint director of IB, the DIG and SSO of police East Zone, DIG of special branch police, SSP of traffic and the area SHO.

IGP Iqbal Mahmood was said to have filed certain reports regarding the CCTV cameras on the Sharea Faisal and geo-fencing.

Informed sources told Dawn that the statements of Hamid Mir, his driver and guard were also submitted before the commission that would resume proceedings on Tuesday.

KARACHI: The judicial commission, formed to investigate attack on Geo News anchorperson Hamid Mir, will meet here on Monday.

The three-member commission, comprising Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rahman and Justice Ejaz Afzal, will hear the case from April 28 to May 2 at Supreme Court Karachi Registry.

The first hearing will be held on Monday at 10:00am and notices have been issued to Sindh Home Secretary, IG Police, DG Rangers, IB Joint Director and DIG East and Special Branch DIG.

ISLAMABAD: Hours after the government’s request for constituting a judicial commission to investigate Saturday’s attack on senior TV anchor Hamid Mir, Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani recommended on Monday three Supreme Court judges for the probe.

The names of Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, Justice Ejaz Afzal and Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman were forwarded to Law Secretary Barrister Zafarullah Khan.

The law ministry sent the names to the interior ministry which will to notify the constitution of the commission under the Pakistan Commission of Inquiry Act 1956.

The commission will ascertain the facts, identify culprits and fix responsibility of the April 19 firing in Karachi which left Hamid Mir severely injured. It is likely to complete its inquiry within 21 days.

The setting up of the commission was welcomed by a member of the judicial commission which appoints superior court judges, former Supreme Court Bar Association chief Yasin Azad.

A police team is also investigating the incident.

The names of the judges of the Special Court hearing a treason case against former military ruler retired Gen Pervez Musharaf had also been recommended by the judiciary on a request sent by the government on Nov 18 last year.

About Hamid Mir

Mir belongs to a literary and journalistic family. He is a Punjabi of Kashmiri origin.

Hamid Mir joined the Daily Jang (Lahore) in 1987 and worked there as sub-editor, reporter, feature writer and edition in charge. In 1994, he broke the submarines purchase scandal in Daily Jang. Some close friends of Asif Zardari (husband of then Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto) were involved in that scandal, along with some Navy officials. Mir lost his job the day his article was published.

In 1996, Hamid Mir became the editor of the Daily Pakistan in Islamabad, making him the youngest editor of any national Urdu newspaper in the history of Pakistani journalism. He lost his job again in 1997, when he wrote an article in the Daily Pakistan about the alleged corruption of prime minister Nawaz Sharif. Also on 25 December 1997, he launched Daily Ausaf (Islamabad) as founding editor.

In 2002, Mir joined GEO TV as the Northern Region editor. Since November 2002, he has hosted GEO TV’s Capital Talk, a political talk show in which top Pakistani politicians from the government and opposition have appeared. He is also writing a biography of Osama bin Laden, as well as a weekly column in Daily Jang.
